Core concepts
We designed Marad around three so called core concepts:
- Components, categories, and tasks
- Tree structures
- Traffic light system
Components, categories, jobs
Marad allows you to create items such as repair jobs, safety drills, spare parts, and more. The application is built in such a way that one cannot exist without the other. For example:
| Examples | Component/category | Entity |
| A maintenance job is always linked to a component | Main engine | Job: check oil level |
| A spare part is always linked to an inventory category | Paint | Part: 20 liters of blue paint |
| A safety drill is always linked to a safety category | SOLAS drills | Drill: perform fire drill |
Tree structure
Components and categories can be sorted into a tree structure. You can use the SFI system, or simply build your own custom structure.
SFI
- Primary group – 7. Systems for Machinery Main Components
- Secondary group – 73. Compressed Air systems
- Tertiary group – 731. Starting Air Systems
Custom
- Level 1 – Propulsion
- Level 2 – Main Engine
- Level 3 – Cylinder Units
- Level 4 – Cylinder 1
Traffic light system
Colors in Marad always mean the same thing. Blue, dark green, and teal are mainteance and crewing specific colors, but we’ll get to that later!
| Colour | Definition | Explanation |
| Red | Overdue | This item should have been performed already |
| Orange | Needs attention | This item is about to reach the due date |
| Green | On schedule | This item is on schedule |
| Blue | Repair | This item is a repair job and will disappear to the history after it is signed off |
| Teal | Dock | This item is a dock job and will disappear to the history after it is signed off |
| Yellow | No interval | This item has no interval and is therefore always on schedule |
For example, on the home screen of Marad, you’ll find all the key performance indicators (KPI’s):

Summary
In the image below, all three core concepts are visible:
- The components/categories are displayed on the left, the jobs are displayed on the right
- The tree structure displayed as well (main engine -> cylinder units -> cylinder 1)
- The traffic light system (red, orange, green) is clearly visible
